Five mobile racers that actually feel good to steer

Most mobile racers live or die by their controls, and far too many die. We spent a couple of weeks cycling through racing games to find the ones that felt responsive rather than floaty, and these are the ones that survived.

The standout for us was Neon Drift Circuit, a pure arcade drifter that nails the tap-and-hold feel. But we also found a few slower, more deliberate racers that reward smooth lines over raw speed.

A quick tip for anyone new to the genre on phones: turn on manual braking if the game offers it. Auto-brake often feels safe for ten minutes and then becomes a straitjacket once you want to push harder.

We also judged each game on how it ran on a mid-range phone, because a gorgeous racer that stutters at the first hairpin isn't worth the download. Performance is part of the handling.

None of these are simulators, and that's fine. Sometimes you just want a short, loud, satisfying lap, and these deliver that without fuss.
